This word started as a scrap of black walnut. Dark. Rich. Something most people would walk right past. I sat down at the scroll saw and I cut it into the most important word I know. LOVE. Black walnut has a depth that no other wood quite matches. That dark chocolate color. That rich grain. It’s heavy in the hand for its size — denser than you expect. Like the word itself. Like love itself. More weight than it looks like it should carry. This is not a printed sign. This is not mass produced. Every letter was cut by hand on the scroll saw. The design was printed in color so I could see the line against the blade. The letters were drilled and cut from the inside out. And when it was done — I held it in my hands and thought about love. About who I’ve loved. What I’ve loved. The joy of that. And sometimes the sorrow. But mostly the joy. Because love — even when it’s hard — is always worth it. I had a therapist once who kept hand cut wood words in her office. When a client came in struggling she would find the word that fit — hope, courage, believe, faith — and hand it to them. And ask them to hold it during the whole session. There is something about holding a word made of something real — something with weight and texture and grain — that changes how the word lands in you. This piece is small and intentional. 2.375 inches long by 1 inch tall by .75 inches thick. Small enough to hold in one hand. Small enough to carry in a pocket. Small enough to sit on a desk or a nightstand or a windowsill where you see it every single day. Big enough to mean everything. Would a single word change the world?
