Two woods. One word.

Cherry — warm, reddish brown, glowing. The kind of wood that catches the light and holds it.

Black walnut — dark, rich, dense. The kind of wood that carries weight without asking for attention.

Together they became this. LOVE. I sat down at the scroll saw and cut this word from a piece made of both cherry and black walnut. The contrast between the two woods is visible in every letter — the warm reddish tone of the cherry against the deep dark chocolate of the walnut. Light and dark. Together. One word. Which is exactly what love is. This is not a printed sign. This is not mass produced. Every letter was cut by hand on the scroll saw. The design was printed in color so I could see the line against the blade. The letters were drilled and cut from the inside out. And when it was done — I held it in my hands and thought about love. About the light parts of it. And the dark parts. About how you can’t have one without the other. About how the most beautiful things — in wood and in life — are the ones that hold contrast without letting it tear them apart. I had a therapist once who kept hand cut wood words in her office. When a client came in struggling she would find the word that fit — hope, courage, believe, faith — and hand it to them. And ask them to hold it during the whole session. There is something about holding a word made of something real — something with weight and texture and grain — that changes how the word lands in you. This piece measures 3.75 inches long by 1.25 inches tall by .75 inches thick. Large enough to display proudly on a shelf or mantle. Warm enough to hold in both hands. Real enough to mean something. The cherry is the warmth of love. The walnut is the depth of it. Together — the whole truth of it. Would a single word change the world? If it changes you — it changes the world.
