John DuVall
Originally from Toledo, OH, John DuVall now lives on Lake Gaston in Littleton. John began acting and performing in sixth grade, then got into visual art in his 40s. He has had several solo shows and won prizes in Toledo art shows. In November 2020, John had a solo show with the Halifax Arts Council.
Acting is John’s passion, but he loves to create new art from old things. John first got into jewelry making after wanting to create his own version of a necktie, and now specializes in a funky, gender non-specific style. He finds inspiration from mundane places, like a play of light or shadow. His art reflects that inspiration, often having a symmetry of light and shadow or dull and sparkly.
"I find joy in giving new purpose to objects that lost their way. The tarnish that comes from years of existing has extraordinary beauty, and reminds us to find value when the shininess is gone.
The balance between the industrial and the natural has always fascinated me, as has the importance of shadow to create focus. There is also a selection of "adornments" - my personal interpretation of the necktie. Traditional men's neckties left me bored, choked, and uninspired - the adornments are my solution.
As an actor, I strive to find the drama and celebration in my performing art as well as my visual art."
